The date was September 6, 1995. Many people call it the day that Cal Ripken Jr. saved baseball. I call it something else. To me, it is simply "The Day."
Cal was more than a hometown hero in Baltimore. He came from a pure baseball family. His dad was a baseball guy through and through wh

My view on The Pandora's Box Disaster:
The oil disaster in the Gulf is epic. They've opened Pandora's Box and they don't know how to shut it. Check this out from Wikipedia: In Greek mythology, Pandora's box is the large jar carried by Pandora that, when opened by her, unleashed many terrible things on mankind... The original Greek word used was pithos, which is a large jar. It was used for storage of wine, oil and other things. Oil? Well, these greedy fools have found their oil, haven't they…

Tiger Woods was interviewed by The Golf Channel's Kelly Tilghman today. When she asked how things got so out of control, he stated "Going against your core values... I quit meditating... I felt I was entitled... and consequently, I hurt so many p…

More than 200,000 people will die of cancer this year, just like last year and the years before that. Most of those deaths could have been prevented through wellness education. For example, my dad smoked for decades and died of lung cancer. We don't have a huge budget to combat ad campaigns promoting toxic products. We need your help. You can be the cure! Have you lost…

May the Lord bless and keep you, may He prosper you, may He guide your steps this year and all the days of your life. This year is so important for taking ground for Christ. Let not your heart be troubled because of trials and tribulations, for He uses even these things for His glory. You were made stronger because of trials and became wiser through tribulations. Not for your purposes, but for His. Rejoice this day and be used by Him to bless others. He has brought you through so that you may le…

Holiday Gift Giving With a Twist
by A.J. Ali
Is this a season to be jolly or is it a time to grunt the words “Bah Humbug” whenever we find ourselves standing beneath the mistletoe? There are a lot of reasons for us to look at our glasses as half-full right now, but let’s not. Instead, let’s raise our glasses and toast to what we have before getting the bartender to fill it up again for another fabulous round. In the literal sense, that means a rich and melodious Napa cabernet for me. I love my…

Well, it's that time again. For those of you who have known me for more than a year, you know that I have a tradition of asking my friends to take just five minutes out of their super busy schedules (how did we all get sooo busy?) this week to read my annual message of hope and thanksgiving. Although I am sending this out to everyone I know, I hope it touches each and every one of you on a deeply personal level.
This year has been an especially difficult year for many of us. There has been the…

Dick Traweek, a close friend and mentor was killed on Monday in Brentwood. I just called him last Wednesday to tell him how much our friendship meant to me. I had just pulled up to my house and had this overwhelming feeling that I should call him. I'm so glad we had the chance to talk. Yesterday I got the call saying he was gone. I feel numb. Please join me in praying for his family, the Traweek's. The only other thing I can say is, if there's someone you need to say something special to but you…

Most people know the story of Job in the bible, how he went through great trial and tribulation, lost just about everything and finally made it through the other side.
In Job 6:11, Job says: “What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What prospects, that I should be patient?"
Have you ever thought or said those words? I know I have. I spoke on Saturday in Denver to a group of doctors, nurses and cancer survivors on the topic of surviving, thriving and celebrating life. When I mentione…

Congratulations to Angel Cabrera, the 2009 Masters Champion! This was a very unlikely victory. On the first hole of a 3-man playoff between him, Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell, Cabrera pushed his tee shot way right, into the trees. His ball rested uncomfortably at the base of a large pi…

Tiger Woods roared back to the Tour yesterday by defeating Brendan Jones.
He was quoted as saying
"It felt like business as usual" and
"I entered this event with the same intentions I do with every event since I was a little boy. That's to win it. I'm always ready."
Tiger…

I just realized it's been 21 years since I last wore a United States Air Force uniform. Where did the time go? I served our country from 1983 to 1987. It was my privilege to serve our fine nation. It was an honor to serve with many hard-working, loyal and committed people. When I went…

I had a dream.
I had a dream that one day this country would unite behind a person that would lead it to its full potential.
I had a dream that one day there would be a black president. Not for the sake of there being a black president,
but for what it would represent -- that America was truly ready to put the past aside and embrace all of its people. ALL of its people.
Yesterday that dream was fulfilled. Not only was a black president elected, but we can all rejoice in knowing that he…

Fighting Cancer or know someone that is?
You can do it, you can beat cancer! You can survive AND thrive! Sometimes, the body gives out but the soul can live on eternally if you choose. That choice is always up to you! My brother, father, grandmother and some other relatives and close friends have died of cancer -- but their legacies of living victoriously reverberate in my heart and give me hope, courage and inspiration. My wife is a brave cancer survivor. So is my step-daughter. Jimmy V said t…

Running is a part of my weekly cross-training regimen. Usually the first few minutes are laborious. My knees are creaking, my back is saying to me "is this really what you want to do?," and my stride feels like I'm working too hard. But, after five minutes or so, everything seems to gel and I find the right pace, the right rhythm, the right breathing -- I find my stride. From that point on, for the next thirty to sixty minutes, I feel great. My body tells me when to walk a bit, when to run fast…
