Welcome To Golf's Grey Era

Golfers, take a moment of silence to mark April 13, 2013 on your calendar as the day golf officially entered a new era.  Fittingly, this new era has been ushered in by Tiger Woods, a golfer deeply respected and revered for his play but demonized by some for his interpersonal behavior.  Baseball had The…

The Decision

Tiger may not have known that he broke a rule at the time of his drop on 15 on Day 2 of The Masters.  He knowingly gained an advantage by not dropping his ball as close to the original spot as possible. Now that he knows that he broke the rule and he signed an incorrect scorecard as a result, will he accept the 2-shot penalty ruling and play on or will he withdraw from the event? As much as I would like to see Tiger Woods come back to win The Masters, I have to say that he'll score a greater…

The View At The Top

One of the things cyclists love about riding along PCH in Malibu is that the view is always changing.  It's a difficult and sometimes dangerous ride, but it's also extremely rewarding.  Likewise, I welcome the hills and the twists and turns on the road of being "The Wellness Motivator."  While the journey is…

Does "Winning" Take Care of Everything?

I'm as big a fan of Tiger Woods as anyone else.  I'm also a fan of Nike products.  I was thrilled to see his victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and I'm rooting for him in life.  However, I think the Nike ad proclaiming that winning takes care of everything following his being renamed the world's #1 golfer did him and his image-rebuilding campaign a disservice and sends the wrong message to his fans.  Winning itself doesn't come close to taking care of everything, as we've already…

The Next Chapter: "Survive & Thrive with A.J. & Jane"

Since 1998, my wife Jane and I have lost more than a dozen relatives and close friends to cancer.  Some were young, some were old, some were rich, some were poor, some were white, some were black, some were Democrats and some were Republicans.  Cancer doesn't discriminate,…

Friendships & Traditions

There are certain ties that bind friendships together.  A love of sports.  Favorite foods.  Travel.  The list goes on.  What are the ties that bind your strongest friendships together?  Tradition plays a vital role in relationships.  For more than 10 years now, my wife and I make huevos rancheros, fruit salad, mimosas and other items for our traditional Christmas morning brunch.  Friends and family enjoy the tradition and it gives us another tie that binds us together as a couple.  That's…

Fast Food: Spring Bliss Salad

Got a craving for some food fast?  In just a little more than the time it would take you to leave the house, go through the fast death (aka fast food) dispenser line and come home to eat that non-food, you could instead make a wonderful, fresh, natural Spring Bliss Salad.  In just three easy steps, you can be on your way to better health!  1.  Get up off the couch.  2.  Go to the store and buy all natural ingredients.  3.  Throw them together and eat!  Simple, rewarding and much better for…

The Day Cal Saved Baseball... And A Whole Lot More

The date was September 6, 1995. Many people call it the day that Cal Ripken Jr. saved baseball. I call it something else. To me, it is simply "The Day."
Cal was more than a hometown hero in Baltimore. He came from a pure baseball family. His dad was a baseball guy through and through who coached the Orioles, managed them briefly, and raised his two sons in "The Ripken Way" both on the field and off. The Ripken Way needs no explanation in Baltimore. You do what…

Pandora's Box Opened in the Gulf

My view on The Pandora's Box Disaster:

The oil disaster in the Gulf is epic. They've opened Pandora's Box and they don't know how to shut it. Check this out from Wikipedia: In Greek mythology, Pandora's box is the large jar carried by Pandora that, when opened by her, unleashed many terrible things on mankind... The original Greek word used was pithos, which is a large jar. It was used for storage of wine, oil and other things. Oil? Well, these greedy fools have found their oil, haven't… Continue

Tiger Woods Talks About Core Values -- A Lesson For Us All

Tiger Woods was interviewed by The Golf Channel's Kelly Tilghman today. When she asked how things got so out of control, he stated "Going against your core values... I quit meditating... I felt I was entitled... and consequently, I hurt so many people by my own reckless attitude and behavior." Tiger went on to say that he tried to stop and he couldn't stop. This is the most dedicated,… Continue

He's Baaaaaaaaaaack!

Well, I was right. He's back in the hunt for Majors. When

Tiger Woods stated on December 11, 2009 that he was taking an indefinite leave

from competitive golf, the first thing I said was "in other words, the

next time we'll see Tiger play will be at The Masters -- the next Major."

Tiger announced today that he…

Yes, You Can Be The Cure

More than 200,000 people will die of cancer this year, just like last year and the years before that. Most of those deaths could have been prevented through wellness education. For example, my dad smoked for decades and died of lung cancer. We don't have a huge budget to combat ad campaigns promoting toxic products. We need your help. You can be the cure! Have you… Continue

A Word For The Faithful

May the Lord bless and keep you, may He prosper you, may He guide your steps this year and all the days of your life. This year is so important for taking ground for Christ. Let not your heart be troubled because of trials and tribulations, for He uses even these things for His glory. You were made stronger because of trials and became wiser through tribulations. Not for your purposes, but for His. Rejoice this day and be used by Him to bless others. He has brought you through so that you may… Continue

Holiday Gift Giving With A Twist

Holiday Gift Giving With a Twist

by A.J. Ali

Is this a season to be jolly or is it a time to grunt the words “Bah Humbug” whenever we find ourselves standing beneath the mistletoe? There are a lot of reasons for us to look at our glasses as half-full right now, but let’s not. Instead, let’s raise our glasses and toast to what we have before getting the bartender to fill it up again for another fabulous round. In the literal sense, that means a rich and melodious Napa cabernet… Continue

A.J. Ali's 2009 Thanksgiving Message

Well, it's that time again. For those of you who have known me for more than a year, you know that I have a tradition of asking my friends to take just five minutes out of their super busy schedules (how did we all get sooo busy?) this week to read my annual message of hope and thanksgiving. Although I am sending this out to everyone I know, I hope it touches each and every one of you on a deeply personal level.

This year has been an especially difficult year for many of us. There… Continue

Farewell to a True Champion

Dick Traweek, a close friend and mentor was killed on Monday in Brentwood. I just called him last Wednesday to tell him how much our friendship meant to me. I had just pulled up to my house and had this overwhelming feeling that I should call him. I'm so glad we had the chance to talk. Yesterday I got the call saying he was gone. I feel numb. Please join me in praying for his family, the Traweek's. The only other thing I can say is, if there's someone you need to say something special to but… Continue

A Reason For Hope

Most people know the story of Job in the bible, how he went through great trial and tribulation, lost just about everything and finally made it through the other side.

In Job 6:11, Job says: “What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What prospects, that I should be patient?"

Have you ever thought or said those words? I know I have. I spoke on Saturday in Denver to a group of doctors, nurses and cancer survivors on the topic of surviving, thriving and celebrating… Continue

Perseverance Pays Off For Angel Cabrera

Congratulations to Angel Cabrera, the 2009 Masters Champion! This was a very unlikely victory. On the first hole of a 3-man playoff between him, Kenny Perry and Chad Campbell, Cabrera pushed his tee shot way right, into the trees. His ball rested uncomfortably at the base of a large pine, leaving him flirting with a glimpse of a shot to the edge of the green. Instead of reaching the green, Cabrera's second shot slammed into another tree and the ball… Continue
